The solar energy is a nature’s gift and is eco-friendly. But the utilization of solar energy was not achieved in a day. The progression took more than a generation to put the concept from paper into reality. The abundant potential of this solar energy let the world for the best future.

 

Solar panels generate power without any emissions. It does not generate waste and doesn’t require the earth’s limited natural resources. The solar panels have a huge lifespan and are very low in maintenance. Best of all, they are very simple to install.

The discovery of the solar cell to the revolution of industry dates back 100 to 180 years; where the solar power was utilized to heat the water that produced steam to drive the machines. The quick research and growth of this solar energy were started almost 60 years before.


History of Solar Power and its Evolution


The discovery of this historical milestone started in 1767, and the rest is the epic. Later the invention of solar cells led to the production of renewable energy resource.

 

1767 – The Invention Of Solar Oven


Horace De Saussure, the Swiss physicist has invented the initial solar oven. This solar oven uses sunlight to heat the food. This solar oven basic structure was made with an insulated box that was prepared with 3 glass layers that were focused to concentrate the heat of the sun. At present, low-cost solar ovens have become the best solution to prepare the meals as at now access to electricity is limited.


1839 – The Photovoltaic Effect


Edmond Becquerel, a French scientist has observed the photovoltaic effect which made him understand how electricity can be generated from sunlight. Edmond discovered that particular materials create an electrical voltage when exposed to light. His discovery became the base of the Solar Power Generators that became popular today.

 

1873 – Photoconductivity in Selenium


Willoughby Smith, the English engineer in the U.S, found photo-conductivity in solid selenium and also its ability to produce the solar energy.  It made evident that when selenium absorbs light it becomes electrically active.

 

1876 – Electricity from Light


Smith’s discovery helped to find many new paths in this field. This allowed many researchers to research on the production of electricity from solar energy. William Grylls Adams and his scholar Richard Evans Day found the presence of electrical current when a selenium plate got exposed to light.

 

1883 – The Solar Cell



Charles Fritts, an American inventor founded many ideas on making the solar cells. Charles created a solar cell covered with a very thin layer of gold around selenium. This allowed a great path in the history of solar energy and to use solar power as a backup.

 

1887 – The Photoelectric Effect


Heinrich Hertz, a German physicist, founded the presence of a spark of electricity to jump between two electrodes while the UV rays are passed between them. Heinrich found that this process produced more power when it contacted with ultraviolet light, rather than fierce visible light. The solar cells are used now based on the photoelectric effect. They use sunlight and convert it into electricity.

 

1905 – Albert Einstein and The Photon Effect


Albert Einstein was the one behind to formulate the photoelectric effect of light that describes the release of electrons on a metal surface while the light is introduced. He received the Nobel prize for his published papers on the photoelectric effect.

 

1908 – Copper Collector 1908


William J. Baileys, copper collector founded a copper collector for storing the electric energy by using insulated boxes and copper coils.


1918 – Single Crystal Silicon


Jan Czochralski, a Polish scientist, invented the modern solar cells made of silica. He discovered a method to grow a cell with single-crystal silicon.

 

1954 – Discovery Of Photovoltaics


Gerald Pearson, David Chapin, and Calvin Fuller made the initial silicon photovoltaic solar cell. These solar cells are made to power small electrical equipment with enough electricity backup. They made the first device that converts sunlight into electrical power.


1956 – Silicon Photovoltaic Technologies



Western Electric company made solar cells available in the market for commercial purpose with its silicon photovoltaic technologies. But, the huge cost of silicon solar cells was the reason behind the limited sales in the market.


1958 – Use of Solar Energy in Space

 


One of the earliest uses of solar energy was in outer space. These are mainly used in the satellites and then in the space stations. Further, solar energy gained its support when the government approved to power space exploration equipment.

 

1970 – Research Drives Costs Down


Exxon Corporation researched and created solar cells from cheaper silicon materials. By this method, the solar cell is manufactured at a lower cost and was used in a wide variety of applications.


1982 – First Solar Power Plant


Arco Solar was the first solar power plant based in California. It can generate nearly 1000 to 1500 kilowatts per hour when operated at full capacity.


1995 – Retractable RV Solar Panels


Thomas Faludy was the first scientist to file a patent for retractable solar panels. These solar cells were used in recreational vehicles


2005 – Solar Panels Are Popular Technology


As the efficiency of solar cells expanded, its wings and residential solar power became even more popular. In 2005, year the use of Solar panels become more available.


2012 – Large Scale Power Plants


Large-scale solar power plants were built around the world. The construction of the Golmud Solar Park in China has the capacity of 250 megawatts. Whereas, the Gujarat Solar Park in India has a capacity of 605 megawatts.


2015 – Solar Panels


Solar cells as thin as the paper was produced in this year and each strip can produce up to 50 watts per square meter.


2016 – Sunless Solar Power


The researchers from California University and the Australian National University discovered some materials that shine when exposed to the heat. When these materials were combined with thermo-photovoltaic cells, they can convert heat into electricity without the need of the sun.


Present Solar Power


The use of Solar power has gained its peak and is applied in many areas in the world. At present, it is the most efficient and cost-effective source of energy. When humanity is the working towards the less future of carbon, the solar energy is a very vital resource at present and for our future generation as it gives carbon-free energy.


Future Improvements


The improvement in solar system technologies let you prepare the solar cells made from the low cost and simple materials to become more efficient at lesser costs.
